Redesigning LEGO set 727 for the grey-era
The last blue-era 12v locomotive to be released was the sturdy looking locomotive 727 from 1977, which represents a diesel locomotive. As the minifig was introduced in 1978, this 727 was not designed to accommodate a train driver.
LEGO set 727 (1977)
Of cours I started wondering what 727 would have looked liked had it been released 3 years later in the grey era. And so I did a 1980s style reinterpretation of 727, here's what I came up with:
The redesign process started off by switching to a 1980s 28x6 base plate. Like the original 727 the redesign first has 2 rows of red bricks, followed by 1 row of yellow plates. The only train doors that sort-of match this color-schema are those of train set 7740, so I used these. The light stickers on the original are replaced by 1980 light bricks. The black vents and access panels were copied directly from the original 727 design. Also lifted off 7740 are the computer bricks and the windscreen, all in order to accommodate the train driver minifig.
The roof opens up easily, uses 7725 3x3 red corner slopes, matches the color scheme of the original 727 and includes the smooth grey engine bricks of the original. A fresh new set of stickers is provided by brickstickershop.com.
