In 1980, the LEGO Train line was refreshed and re-launched into what has become known as the grey era. Crane wagon 7814 was part of a range of additional rolling stock sets released in that first wave.
A-Model
Every "work" train needs a crane car, and 7814 provides just that. A nice and simple design in yellow and black, a colour scheme later re-used in set 7821. Alongside with 7740 and 7820, this was one of three sets that came with the big 6x28 train baseplate in 1980. Remarkably, 7814 is the only grey era set using the 6x28 baseplate in which the bogies use a black 2x4x1 brick to fill the empty space between the train wheels.
The crane uses two of the new "lattice / train signal stand" parts for the crane, and they are held together using technic parts. The crane is operated by two winches, one to hoist the arm of the crane, the other one to lift the crane hook. The set comes with 2 worker minifigs.
This set was succeeded in 1985 by 7817 Crane Wagon.
B-Model
The b-model consists of a stand-alone crane on a platform and a flatbed wagon carrying goods.
