In 1983, LEGO introduced a second wave of sets for the train system, replacing some sets from the first wave. This second wave also included one single train set, this beautiful 7727. It was the third of only three sets that came with the red 12v motor.
A-Model
Around 1983, LEGO must have felt that 7730 was a little bit outdated, so they decided to release an improved version, this 7727. At first glance, this set looks pretty similar to its predecessor, but when looking more closely it reveals a more modernized look. This is helped by the introduction of several parts that were new in 1983, like the 6x6 roof elements and the sliding doors.
The locomotive is once again a steam engine, similar yet different from the engine from 7730. At the base was the red motor, the third and last set to be equipped with that red 12v motor. The locomotive features the first red pistons (in previous sets they were black), and the flexible hoses provide a unique touch. Two of the three wagons are strictly identical, but they transport different types of freight. The first wagon contains a pile of timber and a small buggy (same design as the buggy from station 7824), while the second has a container and a pallete with blue barrels. The third wagon comes with the big sliding doors, which were absolutely new in 1983 (also used in 7819 and 7838).
The set also includes a big forklift with an improved mechanism, alas the spring often gets lost. The track is a circle with two additional straight sections, once again identical to 7730.
It is the train starter set with the shortest selling period, as it was succeeded in 1985 by set 7735. Therefore, it is hard to get by, especially when you are looking for a complete box in good condition, and it is highly sought after.
B-Model
The B-model again represents a charming diesel good train with a whopping 3 additional flatbed wagons (the last one of which is equipped with a brakeman's cab), a tractor, and a ramp.
