In 1983, LEGO introduced a second wave of sets for the train system, replacing some sets from the first wave. As part of this second wave, LEGO replaced railway station 7822 with this new 7824.
A-Model
Like its predecessor, this railway station is huge. But overall it has a different style. It comes with a lot of playing options, with a café outlet, a ticket office and waiting room (complete with train timetable), a telephone and post box all included in the structure. The raised signal box gives it some extra height as well as providing a distinctive entranceway[1]. The waiting area is shielded from the elements by an intricate angled canopy. The set comes with a luggage buggy, which is identical to the one in set 7727 albeit in a different colour.
The station is built on standard baseplates, and unlike 7822 does not come with a stairs crossover. There are some new parts, including a round printed clock tile. The set includes nine minifigs, what is a big improvement compared to 7822. Again, this train station came without conducting rails.
This station had a very long selling period, from 1983 all the way to the end of 1990. It redefined the station format for LEGO Trains by dispensing with the dual platform setup from the previous two sets. This way, the station can sit by itself on a ‘passing loop’, allowing a train to stop at the station while others continue to run. As such, it served as template for several station sets that followed, like 4554 from 1991 and 2150 from 1996.
